Yes it helps footwork, agility/quickness, explosive power, and stamina if done correctly. Watch Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, and esp. Ali jumprope. Ali himself said jumping rope was his favorite exercise. When you watch him in matches his movements are similar to jumping rope. The key is to NOT jump rope in place, which makes jumping rope only good for stamina. To work you leg muscles more like you were dancing and moving around and in and out while fighting move around when you jump rope. Go forward and back, side to side, alternating knee ups, etc. There are many ways to jump rope. If you switch it up then you will become more agile. You’ll be training your feet and legs to move explosively in one direction than another very quickly thus simulating evading an opponent, or moving in to punch than out. If you watch the technical boxers rather than sluggers you can see they have good footwork, which is the result of jumping rope.
Other exercises include shadowboxing concentrating on your pivoting, lateral side to side movement, and in and out movement. You want to make it fluid when you are changing directions, not sloppy. Slower guys will just step in and out side to side. The faster ones spring in and out side to side pushing off the balls of their feet, which is the same movement as moving in and out and side to side when jumping rope. But its not like a hop or jump, it’s very slight. You can also practice it when hitting the heavy bag. Concentrate on moving with the bag keeping a very close distance to the point where one step in or to the side would be within striking distance, which is called being in the pocket. BUT you are practicing being just outside the pocket moving around the opponent. Then step in with combos and than out of quickly of the hitting zone and continually do that practicing your side to side, in and out, and pivoting movements around the bag. Footwork adds to the complete package of a fighter. Good luck and have fun.
